A fractional CTO for seed / Series-A teams.

Most seed and Series-A teams don't need a full-time CTO yet — but they absolutely need senior engineering oversight. Architecture reviews before costly mistakes, help hiring the first engineers, incident backup when the platform goes down at 2 a.m., and a technical voice the founder can call when a vendor is selling them something questionable.

Why me specifically

Four concrete reasons.

Architectural reviews

Before you ship, I read your design docs and call out the decisions that will be expensive to change later. Before you commit to a vendor, I read their contract and push back on the lock-in clauses.

Hiring support

Tech interviews, spec review, pay-band benchmarking, and 'should this person be full-time or fractional?' — all covered. You get someone who has hired, led, and fired engineers before.

Incident backup

Production down at 2 a.m.? I'm reachable. Not 100% of the time — I'm a fractional hire, not an oncall replacement — but as a second-line human when your primary engineer is overwhelmed.

Board / investor communication

I can translate between your engineering reality and what the board / investors need to hear. Technical updates, security reviews, incident post-mortems as needed.

What it costs

Real ranges, no back-and-forth.

$3k – $6k / month

10–30 hours per month, 3-month minimum. Scaled to the shape of your team and the phase you're in.

Questions

Asked often enough.

What's the minimum commitment?
3 months. Less than that isn't enough time to develop useful context about your system and team.
Do you write code?
Sometimes, on specific high-leverage pieces. But the fractional-CTO engagement is leadership-shaped — if you primarily need code, a scoped-build or retainer engagement fits better.
Will you be on Slack all day?
No. Fractional means I'm not watching Slack 9-to-5. I do a weekly founder sync, answer async messages within hours, and am reachable for real incidents. If you need someone on Slack all day, you need a full-time hire.
Can this convert into full-time?
In rare cases. More often, a fractional engagement helps you figure out what kind of full-time CTO you actually need, so you can hire better.
